Last year I launched a program that 100% bombed.
Like…I only had 2 or 3 legit sales…ended up giving the program to people for free so it wouldn’t be so empty, and then the free students still didn’t show…yup.
I’m not going to lie; it wrecked me and my confidence.
I really doubted my abilities to succeed on my own, outside of my success from being tied to a big company name.
Have you ever felt like that in your entrepreneurial journey?
Or is that one of the reasons you’re too scared to cut the cord & go out on your own?
It took me two months to “get back on the horse” and try again with much greater success the next couple of launches but that first launch will always stay with me.
Did I make a lot of rookie mistakes? YES!
Am I grateful for the experience? YES!
Because I get to share with you what I learned so you can avoid my costly mistakes. So for this letter, I want to talk about…
—> THE POWER OF BETA TESTING <—
I never want you to launch something without beta testing it first.
- I don’t care if your email list is zero.
- I don’t care if the only people who say yes are related to you.
- And I don’t care how many times you’ve taught the material before.
Find a handful of people who you can test out your program BEFORE ever launching it in the wild.
This week I started a beta test for the newest product I’m creating called ABC to Digitally Launch™. I’m helping people discover, create, AND launch their first (or easiest) digital product. And I’m specifically making the mini-course for people who have little to no tech skills.
I extended the beta invitation to my community (no one new) and got 16 quick yes’s! Thursday was our first class of three, and it was AMAZING! And here’s why:
- Curse of Knowledge
- I’ve launched hundreds of marketing campaigns and digital products in my career, so no matter how hard I try, I can never experience the process like a newbie ever again. I’m too far removed from those early days, and I suffer from the “curse of knowledge” that all experts have. Even the vocabulary we use is different. Getting my students’ validation even on my word choices was so helpful! I didn’t teach over their heads. This happens a lot to us subject matter experts, so be aware.
- Questions Revealed Blind Spots
- They asked questions that revealed holes in my teaching. My material was good, but it didn’t start where they were starting from. Sometimes your Step 1 is actually their Step 3, and we got the real 1&2 for them.
- Curiosity = Entertainment
- One my beta testers asked me, out of just pure curiosity, what type of digital creator Tony Robbins was? And without even missing a beat, I listed off a number of influencers and their digital creator types. And then we all riffed for a bit, which led to the idea that I should add that kind of profiling in my teaching to up the entertainment factor. Genius! Teaching and having fun at the same time!
My program will be INFINITELY better because of these 16 testers! No matter how many times I’ve done something. No matter how well I know my material. Their feedback will perfect the course to what they actually need, not what I think they need.
SO before you ever launch something new in the wild, always beta test your product even if it’s a free lead magnet. Have someone else read, listen, learn your material to help you achieve that top 1% level of educator, provider, creator in the crowded digital world.
